Summer 2004
10 Questions & 10 Answers
In the Summer of 2004, Psychedelic Furs manager Rob Dillman took the time to answer the Top Ten questions that were on all of our minds regarding the future career plans of the Furs and Richard Butler.
Has any material already been recorded for the new Furs album?
Nothing has been recorded yet (with the exception of some very rough scratch demos).
The band is currently beginning to sort through a bunch of ideas, and should be ready (and off the road long enough) to go into the studio by year's end. We're all VERY excited!!
What will the recording line-up be, and who will produce?
Final decisions are not made yet, but I can tell you that a number of accomplished producers have made their interest in participating clearly known. The lineup will certainly include the Furs in their current form....with some guest artists likely.
When do you realistically expect a new album to be released?
Realistically.....fall 2005......and worldwide tour.
Are there any plans to reissue/remaster the remaining LPs (from Mirror Moves on), or to reissue the video collection on DVD?
Probably, as the Furs tour more extensively and new releases appear....I'm sure you will see a smattering of various reissues and re-releases...including videos.
We do expect Sony to get to the reissues/remasters of the remainder of the catalog soon.
Which of the new songs (among those which have been played live over the past 4 years) can we expect to hear on the new album? Will any be relegated to a solo Richard Butler release?
"Broken Aeroplanes" and "California" are both solo songs from Richard, and will appear on his record.
As for the unreleased Furs tunes .....maybe......it all depends on whatever the final concept for the new album is. Some of those songs are in contention, although, the forthcoming album is not being written around existing songs.
What is the status of Richard's solo album?
It has been completed.....it's being mixed now. Produced by Jon Carin. It will be released this winter. More details soon.
Does Richard plan to tour (outside of the Furs) in support of his solo album?
Yes. I expect a pretty intense promotional and touring schedule for Richard in support of the album. He's gonna be a busy busy guy!!
Are there any plans to vary the live setlists to include a broader range of material?
Sure. Although it may not seem so to many of us who do the mulitple show thing....the setlist has varied quite a bit since this time last year with titles like Alice's House, Flowers, Here Come Cowboys, All Of This & Nothing, India, and Virginia Plain being incorporated in and out of the set. The Furs experience these days is a different, and many say better one than in decades past. That will most certainly continue to evolve and keep the band fresh. We should expect a more varied setlist as time goes on......although there's always somebody at every show asking for "Pretty In Pink" or "Heartbreak Beat".
What should we expect in terms of touring in the coming year?
Who doesn't love life on a bus??? Seriously, the Furs have been touring more extensively than they had in a long time....as long as audiences continue to respond.....I know the band enjoys playing for them.
WHEN WILL THE FURS PLAY IN THE UK?
Soon. Possibly even this fall. It's been difficult to find time quite frankly.
There are still places in the U.S. that the Furs are trying to cover....but I know that the band will be taking the show across the pond before you know it!! We'll let you know the moment it's a "go".
I also want to say, on behalf of the band, thanks for the continued support and interest!! We're going to continue to create the best live experience for you as is possible, and the new music on the way will absolutely floor you......so hang on to something sturdy!!
These Furs are just getting started.......
