Richard Butler art exhibition in Beacon, NY

An exhibition of new paintings by Richard Butler will be on display at Van Brunt Gallery in Beacon, NY, from June 10th–July 3rd. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 10th, from 6–9pm.

The distorted figures and faces often bear fanciful attributes, such as a sumo wig or large cross hanging from a necklace of oversized black beads; a recent series obscures the face altogether in favor of an almost sinister, inky, form-fitting mask, festooned with something like Mickey Mouse ears. Often set into bleak landscapes, the ultimate effect is one part love, two parts alienation, lending a haunted, melancholic air to the final product.

Of course, these same qualities will be familiar to anyone who's listened to Butler's music over the years. Likening the writing process to making a painting, he notes, "They both come from the same place. When you write lyrics, it just comes to you—you get down a stream of feelings and ideas, and then afterwards you realize what you've been trying to say, and you sit down and refine it." The paintings follow the same pattern. Even with their initial computer-based sketches, "it has to be paint at the end of the day," and he's exceedingly sensitive to the manifestation of the material on the canvas.

Press release from Koch

Old news to BDD readers, but here's the official press release:

Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler to Embark on a Solo Tour of the U.S.

New, Self-Titled Album to Be Released on April 18th, 2006

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/06/2006 -- Psychedelic Furs frontman Richard Butler is preparing to hit the road for a thirteen city North American tour to coincide with the release of his upcoming, self-titled solo album. The confirmed dates kickoff in Chicago on March 20th and will include stops in New York City, Seattle, Toronto and Los Angeles before wrapping up in San Diego on April 8th.

Butler is supporting his debut solo effort titled "Richard Butler," which is scheduled to be released on April 18th. It is his first venture into the studio since Love Spit Love's "Trysome Eatone" in 1997.

Although he remains committed to his ongoing work with the Psychedelic Furs, Butler's equally excited to embark on this tour. "I like the idea of going out and doing something more personal and intimate, with maybe just one or two other musicians," he states. "I've never done that, and it's great to have that challenge, instead of having a loud rock band to take the pressure off me."

Here is the full list of dates:

March 21 Cleveland, OH Beachland Ballroom
March 22 Toronto, ONT Lee's Palace

Good Days, Bad Days

The first single off of Richard Butler's upcoming solo album (out April 18, 2006 on Koch Records!), "Good Days, Bad Days", has been released to radio stations and reports are starting to come in from folks who have heard it getting airplay. Why not call your favorite local station and request it?

You can also download a clip of the track here at BDD, or listen to it in streaming audio from Richard's MySpace page.

Good Days, Bad Days
i want to unmake every bed
that I laid down on
give back everything I've won
i want to unfly every crow,
unwind every mile
undo everything I've done

good days there'll be bad days
good days there'll be bad days

i want to unread every book
that my eyes laid on
unsay everything I've said
i want to unsing every song,
unwrite every line
unstep every step I've made

good days there'll be bad days
good days there'll be bad days

i want to unsew every seam,
unwind every clock
unbreathe every breath I've made
i want to unset every sun
that my eyes fell on
till I give back all I've won

good days there'll be bad days
good days there'll be bad days
good days there'll be bad days
good days there'll be bad days

Live dates & a reminder...

Be sure to check the live page at BDD for the latest addition (hello, Portland!) to Richard Butler's solo tour schedule, as well as links to buy tickets as they become available: burneddowndays.com/live

Also, to address the two biggest questions at this time:
1. I have nothing to do with where RB and the Furs play, I just make the announcements! Please do not contact me asking if he will be playing in such and such a city or country. If you don't see it on BDD...I don't know about it!
2. I do not yet have the touring band lineup for RB's solo tour. As soon as I have it, I will post it on the site and make an announcement to the mailing list.

Thanks, and Happy New Year!
